Punter's Picks
Week three of the Domestic season sees several mouth watering clashes, a newly housed Shamrock Rovers travel to arch rivals Bohemians while newly promoted Dundalk host bitter local rivals Drogheda and between all the animosities there is money to be made.
The live match is of course the Dublin derby, and all the bookies have set their stalls out with a variety of markets to tempt a punt from the average fan.
Bohs v Rovers
10/11 for the home side to get the three points is the price being touted around, and in my opinion it’s a tad short. 7/2 for the other side is a massive price considering the away team are riding high following their 2-1 win over Sligo Rovers last week. Personally I feel the draw at 23/10 is a more highly likely prospect.
Jason Byrne is 11/2 with Paddy Power, top price, to be first goalscorer while Gary Twigg at 9/1 may be worth a shot for those who are prone to such markets. However free kick supremo Killian Brennan, if selected (he's struggling with a rib injury), at 9/1 may be an outside shot and would be my selection.
In terms of double results I feel draw/draw at 9/2 with William Hills is a good bet.
Bet of the Game: Draw @ 23/10
Bray v Galway
Surprise packages Galway United make the trek to Wicklow to take on a Bray Wanderers side which has yet to find form this season, and it would be hard to see past the Westerners keeping their 100% record in tact.
7/4 for the away win on Sky bet is the top price being offered and it’s hard to back against Ian Foster's men, especially considering the away side's form - two games and zero goals, whereas Galway have bagged four in their last two outings and are yet to concede.
For the braver punter, Galway -1 at 5/1 with PP could well be worth looking at.
Bet of the Game: Galway -1 @ 5/1
Derry v Cork
Derry City have started well this season, holding a strong Bohs outfit last week after overcoming a resilient Drogheda side on the opening night. While 10/11 might not be huge value, a winner is a winner and I think they should do the deal.
For those who fancy an upset, Ladbrokes are offering a generous 3/1 for the Leesiders to get their first win of the season.
However, if you fancy Derry to secure victory but feel 10/11 is a tad short, 15/8 with PP for the Northerners to ‘win to nil’ might be of more value as Cork lack a strong attacking force at the minute.
Bet of the Game: Derry to win to nil @ 15/8
Dundalk v Drogheda United
The last meeting of these sides resulted in a 0-0 stalemate in a rather drab affair at United Park, but that was a pre-season clash and not a league game with three points riding on it.
Neither side have scored a single goal this season and at 11/8 under 1.5 goals with PP might not be a bad bet.
Dundalk are Evens favourites with Ladbrokes, owing to a strong home-side bias, but in a local derby such as this, it will only take one goal and Drogheda at 3/1 with PP is a bit of value.
In their last encounter, Darren Mansaram looked very dangerous before going off injured, but he's now back fit and at 23/10 for anytime goalscorer he may well be worth a punt.
Being a Drogheda fan, it is hard to back against your own side, but Dundalk with home advantage may be too strong for the burgeoning Drogheda squad.
Bet of the game: Dundalk @ Evs
Sligo Rovers v St Patrick's Athletic
Saturday night sees Jeff Kenna bring his Dublin side to The Showgrounds with the home side being touted as 11/8 favourites with Ladbrokes. St Pat's in my opinion are over-priced at 9/5 with both Boyles and PP and once again, it’s a sign of the home team bias that is allocated in these games.
However for those not entirely confident of an away victory, PP are offering 1/2 about St Pat's +1 goal to get the win.
Bet of the Game: St Pat's @ 9/5
Bet of the night
Personally I feel its hard to ignore a Galway Utd, Derry City Double at just over 4/1. So for my bet of the night, I am stacking a massive ten euro on this double.
