John Caulfield hoping for a big performance ahead of Bohemians
Cork City manager John Caulfield spoke to the assembled media, including Extratime.ie, during this past week in Bishopstown Stadium. The club record appearance holder was speaking in the aftermath of the draw last Sunday with current SSE Airtricity Premier League Champions Dundalk. It was the first time City has got something from Oriel since July 2013.
Cork City drew 1-1 with Bohemians last May and the Rebel Army will be hoping for more points this time in the home leg, however the short turnaround after Sunday’s match has proved challenging according to Caulfield.
“It’s a huge game and the turnaround is short because we didn’t get home until the early hours of the morning after a really high intensity game against Dundalk and its about getting our recovery in ahead of the game as we know Bohemians are very strong”
City will be respecting Bohemians with the Enisskeane native full of admiration for his counterpart Keith Longs work in the Bohemians dugout.
“Keith to be fair to him has assembled the best of the players who are part time and they have got great results like beating Dundalk and Derry 4-2 last week.”
This will be the clubs first home game since before the break and as a result Caulfield reflected on his side’s previous away league games.
“You know you come back from the break and have a tricky trip to Derry and then after Iceland you have a fantastic trip performance to Longford and then you have Dundalk who have just been knocked out of Europe during the week so you’re expecting a backlash; but then because they’re at home they know they can go nine points clear. Since I’ve been here we’ve taken no points off them and haven’t even scored and before I came in it was a very poor record.
“Even going up there and to concede so early but to come back and give such a good performance retain the ball and play very well and get back into the game have chances overall we were hoping to have won the game but the crucial thing now for us is to keep the pressure on and I hope the supporters come out in force as the second half of the season will be crucial to us.”
With the league transfer window closing this Friday there will be comings and goings within the club for example Rob Lehane going to Sligo today.
“Rob is going on loan to Sligo. I just felt that he had picked up a few minor injuries this year and that has prevented him from getting a proper run. I see him as one for the future; I thought after last year that he might have broken through quicker, but he picked up a knock at the very start and that knocked him back. We had a good chat, he needs to play games; hopefully he will get games and goals up there and come back to us for the start of next season.
Even today a tabloid newspaper linked Greg Bolger and Kenny Browne with a move to Leeside but Caulfield doesn’t expect to see either in green this season.
“The problem at the moment is that I’m hearing lots of rumours and it’s hard to know what to believe but we haven’t done anything with St Pat’s at the moment. They are two top players for them but I expect it to be very quiet as everybody’s budget is maxed out. “
However he said he’s still looking for an attacking player to bring into the club before the deadline but doesn’t know if it will be possible.
“We are looking for an attacking player but will we bring in one this week well I don’t know.”
While the news regarding Billy Dennehy is no clearer with the Tralee native speaking to many clubs but nothing is confirmed yet but Caulfield hopes he will be gone this week.
“Regarding Billy people are speaking to him but I haven’t heard anything certain and I would hope that it will be finished for Friday.
If he happens to stay he will not be involved with the squad as the manager said; “He is not in our plans for the rest of the season.”
During the first half of last Sunday’s match Caulfield was sent to the stand and when questioned by Extratime.ie reporter Stephen Walsh as to whether he will face any sanction for the dismissal to the stands he replied.
“I’ll be in the dugout on Friday. You’ll speak to the people involved and you seek to get a conclusion from it soon. The fourth official got me sent off not the referee to be fair to Neil Doyle. I have played 600 odd games for City and never got sent off and am I passionate man; yes I am!”John Caulfield hoping for a big performance ahead of Bohemians
