Matthews optimistic ahead of local Derby
Drogheda travel to local rivals Dundalk this Friday night for the first of their meetings this season and Drogs manager Alan Matthews feels their pre-season victory has no bearing on tomorrow night's encounter.
“We beat them pre-season on penalties in a local cup match, it means nothing in comparison to tomorrow night”.
The last time the two sides met, both sides ended the game with ten men in what actually wasn’t as heated an affair as that stat might suggest, but Matthews feels derbys always have an extra dimension.
“Any derby match I have been involved in always has been a good affair, especially for the fans there’s that bit extra to the occasion.”
Matthews is optimistic in regards to tomorrow nights clash, “We are away from home and Dundalk are a good side, but you have to be optimistic and I’m looking forward to the clash tomorrow night.”
Drogheda have had a mixed start to their season, losing narrowly away to Derry and taking a point at home to Bray, but Matthews remains confident in his teams ability.
“We are only two games into the season, but the lads are working well together and working very hard on the training ground.”
“From nothing, we have put together a good bunch of lads with a good attitude towards what we have to do here.”
There is a long way to go in this year's domestic league, but the Boynesiders are certainly not a team to be written off just yet.
