League Report: Cabinteely 1 - 1 Waterford United

A Kevin Knight deflected goal in the 93rd minute ensured honours ended even at Stradbrook on Monday evening after Evan Galvin had given the visitors the lead on his debut.

It was the visitors who started the rearranged fixture the brighter with new signing Cory Galvin firing wide on two occasions from outside the box. The former Ipswich Town player then forced a good save from Cabinteely goalkeeper Evan Whelan after he dispossessed Stephen Dunne before beating two Cabo defenders and striking from inside the box.

Moments later Cabinteely’s best effort of the half arrived when a looping shot from outside the box from Dunne forced Waterford keeper Robert Birdsall to watch nervously as the effort sailed just over the visiting crossbar.

As the game approached half-time, a short corner from Waterford played to Cory Galvin saw the wingers low cross connect with teammate Anthony McAlavey, but the forward’s rising shot could not test Whelan.

When the side emerged from the half-time break, it was the visiting side who settled into their stride quickest, but a tame free kick from McAlavey failed to test Whelan. With the game approaching the hour mark, Cabo’s John McKeown will be disappointed after the home side were awarded a dangerous free kick 25 yard from goal but the midfielder failed to test Birdsall.

As Roddy Collins side continued to push for their first goal in over ten hours of football, Evan Galvin then forced another good stop from Whelan in the Cabinteely goal - after a lovely weighted pass from McAlavey before the winger cut inside, beating two defenders and striking a curling left footed shot.

With the game at Stradbrook looking like it was destined for a nil all draw, Galvin popped up on the edge of the Cabinteely box and the debutant let fly with a strong low drive from 25 yards out that found the back of the net despite Cabo keeper Whelan getting a hand to the ball.

Deep into injury time, with the Blues looking set for their first victory in eight games, the late goal curse in Stradbrook struck again when a Kevin Knight shot that appeared to be heading wide before deflecting off Colum Nugent and looping over keeper Birdsall to send the home crowd into hysterics.
