Waters shines in the rain for Rovers

A 3-0 victory at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday evening ensured Shamrock Rovers progressed to the second round of the Europa League qualifiers, after the game two goal hero Kieran Marty Waters spoke to Extratime.ie about his sides victory.

“It was a relief to get through because we done well over there but, we didn’t take our chances, they could have taken theirs but, we managed to do the business here [In Tallaght Stadium]. We managed to score when we needed.”

When asked about not taking their chances in the first legs, the Hoops winger was quick to explain that the heat in Luxembourg was hard to deal with and nothing like he had previously experienced.

“The heat was insane, I’ve never been on a holiday that warm before, but to go and play in it was completely different all together”.

Despite heading into the second leg with the sides level at 0-0, Waters was delighted that his side could adapt to the rainy Dublin conditions, unlike the visitors who failed to capitalize with home conditions seven days previous.

“A typical Dublin night” he said. We managed to do the business thank god, we adapted more to the weather than they did. I think they didn’t punish us over there when they should have and I think we managed to punish them here.”

With injuries to the Rovers squad, Marty Waters has enjoyed an extended run in the Hoops side and providing some vital goals while also showing that he wasn’t afraid to put his head in where it hurt to help his side for Rovers second goal.

“I threw my head in there and I thought I was going to get a boot in the mush, the goals are going in so I can’t complain. I’m getting in some good positions, all the boys are chipping in. The rest of the squad were brilliant tonight, so credit to them.”

Although scoring two goals on at the rain soaked Tallaght Stadium, Waters also shone brightly with his hard work down the left wing and he was delighted with the chances his side created.

“Yeah, we created chance, but when people say you don’t take them - we are getting goals in dribs and drabs but we are still scoring. Fingers crossed when it all goes right, we keep on scoring, tonight [Tuesday] it went well.”

With less than 20 minutes remaining, Waters had an opportunity to shoot from the edge of the box to attempt to complete his hat trick but he chose to try and find a teammate, after the game he explained that it’s not about individuals, it is a team effort.

“It is the team that goes forward, It's not just individuals we work in training and try and boost each other up. We work as a team and tonight it was a team's victory.”

Looking ahead to the Second round Waters explained that his side will be well prepare, but they must also ensure they put a performance to the best of their ability.

“We have to wait and see who we play on Thursday, see what they’re like. You can do all the homework in the world, but when you get out onto the pitch it’s a different story and you have to adapt to the game, so figures crossed we can do the business there.”
