Tough draw for Youths in Women's Champions League
FAI Continental Tyres Women's National League Champions, Wexford Youths Women’s FC, are set to travel to Poland to make their European debut in this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying campaign.
The Youths have been handed a tough draw in Group 7 with 2 of their 3 opponents reaching the knockout stages in the 2014/2015 season. Hosts KKPL Medyk Konin of Poland are placed as second seeds within the group and progressed to the Round of 32 in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Gintra Universitetas of Lithuanian are first seeds within the group and progressed as far as the last 16 in the 2014/2015 campaign. Other contenders within the group, Cardiff Met Ladies FC of Wales are placed as fourth seeds. However, Cardiff have previously competed in a UEFA women’s Champions League qualifying campaign in 2012/2013 season but failed to reached the knockout stages.
Speaking to ExtraTime.ie after the draw Wexford Youth’s midfielder Becky Cassin was just glad the draw was now complete and she knew where her side would be heading.
“It’s great to finally know where we’ll be travelling to and now we can begin to prepare accordingly. The games will be tough no doubt but we will give 100% as we always do for each other and make the most of this opportunity. Just like the rest of the club, I’m really excited to get back into pre season and continue to develop and prepare for the Champions League and National League!”
