Anthony Elding has left Derry City by mutual consent

Anthony Elding, this morning, has parted ways with Derry City by mutual consent.

The striker had struggled to stake his claim at the Brandywell in his stint and with his short term contract coming to an end at the end of next month, both the club and the player have reached an agreement to terminate his contract. 

The former Sligo striker signed for Derry in mid-February but has only scored two goals in his short spell. Elding, having failed to impress with his goal tally, will be wholly remembered for his brief appearance in net against Galway last month. 

Derry boss Peter Hutton speaking to derrycityfc.net this morning thanked the striker for his professionalism and efforts in his stay at the club:

“To be fair to Anthony, he’s been a fantastic professional, but we’ve been thinking about it the past few weeks now and I think we’re going a different direction now and I think as well we need to bring though some of our youth as well. We’d like to thank him for his time here and his service to the club and wish him all the best for his future wherever it may lie.”

Hutton finished by explaining some of the reasons behind the striker’s departure: 

“I don’t think it worked out for him here, but it was no fault of Anthony’s, he was a consummate professional and worked extremely hard when he was here. Very good with the young players too and they’ll benefit from that as well, but as I say, we’re just going to go a different direction."

“In an ideal world hopefully we’ll be able to bring some players in, but that’s an ongoing thing now so we’ll have to see how things go before the window opens.”
