Fagan bags a brace as the Saints slot three past the Gypsies

St Patrick’s Athletic continued their fine run of form, which has seen The Saints move up to fourth in the SSE Airtricity League Premier, with a 3-1 victory in the Dublin derby against rival Bohemians at Richmond Park on Tuesday evening. After the game two goal hero Christy Fagan spoke to Extratime.ie about his side victory.

“Yeah it was a good result” he said, “three points against a decent team who are on the back of a good result, so we knew it was going to be a tough game coming into the fixture and I’m just happy to come out with the win.”

After missing over a month of league action the former Bohs strike is happy that the injuries are now behind him and he can now concentrate on playing football again while recouping peak fitness.

“It is good to get another few minutes under my belt and try pick the fitness up again, it's going to take another few games but happy again to get a run out tonight.”

Despite returning to the St Pats side a number of weeks ago, Fagan was delighted to break his goal drought that had stemmed back to March 13 when he scored in a 3-0 victory over Bray Wanderers at Richmond Park.

“It's always nice as a striker to get on the scoresheet” Fagan explained, “and tonight I was happy to get two, but overall apart from the goals I’m pleased to get a run and get the fitness, building up again while being happy with my performance”.

On the 22nd minute Fagan opened the scoring with a fantastic overhead kick but it was his second goal that showed his eye for goal after a great shot from Ian Bermingham, the striker poacher’s instinct kicked in as he headed past Dean Delaney in the away goal.

“It was just a reaction, right place right time” he recalled “Bermo’s [Ian Bermingham] connected well with the shot from Killian’s [Brennan] corner, I just turned my head on it, it's come right at me and I've just managed to get a little flick on it and was happy enough to see it go in.”

Although finishing the game with two goals it could have been a lot different with 17 minutes remaining, James Chambers played a brilliant ball to Fagan to finish his hat-trick but the forward could not get his shot away and squandered the opportunity.

“Yeah I should have had the hat-trick, I probably won't get an easier chance to get one. James has tied one up perfect for me and my eyes properly lit up and didn't concentrate because I thought it was a given. I was gutted not to get the hat trick but happy enough overall.”
