Monaghan United -v- Shelbourne

Monaghan United aim to continue their home dominance over Shelbourne as they take on the Reds in Kingspan Century Park on Friday night (kick-off 20:00). Since Shelbourne were demoted following the 2006 season, these sides have faced off on four occasions on Monaghan soil. Amazingly the Dubliners have failed to score, conceding eight goals and twelve points.

Opening Fixtures
Despite being three goals down after only 14 minutes against Longford Town last week, Monaghan United showed admirable composure and fought back to earn a point which may even have turned into a famous victory. Shelbourne, on the other hand, came through their opener with a 2-1 victory over Wexford Youths in Tolka Park. Goals from Patrick Madden and Anthony Flood saw Shels win for the first time on opening day since entering the First Division.

Team News
Mick Cooke will only have to plan without Barry Clancy who is suspended for the game. The Mons manager is looking forward to the occasion and hopes people will come out and back the team.

“I believe that United are a team worth supporting this season and in Friday night’s game we should have a cracker. Shelbourne always bring a good support that creates a bit of atmosphere.”

Shelbourne have Darren Meenan missing due to suspension. Alan Keely only trained for 15 minutes on Wednesday before retiring due to a chest infection and he will not play on Friday. Kevin Doherty will fill the gap despite also falling to train this week due to injury.

Whelan Century
Friday night’s game sees Paul Whelan play his 100th league game for Monaghan United. Whelan came through the schoolboy teams at Monaghan United before being promoted to the senior squad by current manager, Mick Cooke.

The game kicks off at 20:00 and Extratime.ie will be there to bring you all the goals and incidents on the night.

Extratime.ie Prediction: Shelbourne to break their Monaghan curse and win 1-0.
