The League of Ireland Playlist

With the advent of the second series of games, here’s a League of Ireland Playlist to suit all fans’ moods now that the first series is finished. Those moods, of course, will depend on which team you follow.

Dundalk FC

At the end of last season their track was easy to pick: We are the Champions by Queen. But what about 12 games into the new season? Top of the league and deservingly so. Their manager, Stephen Kenny, recently signed a contract extension to the delight of the Lilywhite fans. At this juncture the Pussycat Dolls’ song Dontcha seems apt. Doesn’t’ every team wish their form was as hot as the Lilywhites? Town fans could also tease: ‘Dontcha wish your manager was Stephen Kenny?’

Cork City

Cork’s resurgence last season saw them finish runners up which would make Lady Gaga’s Edge of Glory a suitable track for last season. They are still second at the moment and  full of optimism. Their track of the moment is Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing.

Shamrock Rovers

At one time they seemed like they would dominate the league for years to come thanks to the success in the league and a European windfall. But this wasn’t followed up with domestic dominance so much as decay. Eimear Quinn’s The Voice was the last song to win the Eurovision for Ireland, once a heavyweight of the competition, and Rovers fans can probably empathise with that. Maybe they didn’t want to win it anyway.

Bohemians

Bohemians have been surprising everyone this season with their fine form particularly when you consider the amount of young players in their squad. They keep picking up the points though and are in fourth place. Are they Living on a Prayer? They have managed to pick up points against opposition favoured to finish ahead of them, they certainly seem to be Cork City’s Kryptonite -3 Doors Down.

St. Patrick's Athletic

They didn’t mount much of a title defence last season though they did manage to pick up the FAI Cup after a long wait. Was it worth it? Currently fifth place and ten points off the top of the table they can muse over whether or not they will mount a title charge as they listen to Adele’s Rolling in the Deep.

Longford Town

The Black and Red have had a flier of a start to their Premier League campaign and are sitting in a very respectable sixth place. Form like this must have their fans feeling like nothing can stop them. Movin’ on Up by Primal Scream seems an apt track for their season so far.

Derry City FC

It’s been an incredibly mediocre start for the Candystripes and they are plonked about as mid-table as can be. Their fans will be thinking that a club of their stature should be doing much better, they can think about it as they listen to Stuck in the Middle with You.

Galway United

For any team that gets promoted, their first and foremost goal must be to consolidate their Premier Status. Galway have done just that by quietly going about their business without being remarkable. The Tribesmen have brought some very positive publicity to the league because of their prestigious supporter, President Michael D. Higgins. Higgins likes to sit amongst the people who elected him and we’ve selected Christy Moore’s Ordinary Man as Galway’s track which also happens to be the President’s favourite song.

Drogheda United

Not long ago Drogheda defied the odds to finish runners up in the league. It looks unlikely that that form will be replicated anytime soon at the Louth club. The highs and lows faced by Drogheda over the last decade makes Ronan Keating’s Life is a Rollercoaster. Sitting in ninth spot they will also be hoping that footballing seasons are swings and roundabouts.

Sligo Rovers

Last year’s Setanta Sports Cup winners were expected to be there or thereabout at the end of the season. To be more precise pundits meant ‘up there’, near the top of the table, not ‘down there’, near the bottom. They find themselves in 10th place and three off the foot of the league. Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy seems apt for a Sligo campaign which has fans baffled.

Bray Wanderers

Coldplay Fix You: The club scrapped hard to avoid relegation last season and, judging by their freefall in series one, they may have the same fight on their hands this year. Trevor Croly has come in to try and fix a club that has looked broken this series.

Limerick

If things are bad for Bray they are worse for Limerick right now. They prop up the table. It was supposed to be the year they returned to Market’s Field but delays in construction see them playing out of the lauded Jackman Park. This was an easy one, D:Ream’s Things can only get better.
