Setanta Sports Cup will not take place in 2015

The Setanta Sports Cup will be put on ice until next year after a failure to agree on dates for fixtures. A press release issued on behalf of the Setanta Sports Committee confirmed that there would be no competition in 2015.

Milo Corcoran, Chairman of the Setanta Sports Cup Committee, revealed that there was a breakdown in agreement over when to fix the matches between the broadcaster and the clubs of the IFA and the FAI.

It was decided to take a break for a year and work on finding a format that works for clubs both sides of the border.

In recent years, the competition has had reduced prize money and some notable pull-outs, like Linfield, who felt that it was too much of a distraction to enter. Corcoran hopes that issues clubs have with the competition can be ironed out ahead of next year and feels there is a future for an all-Ireland competition.

"Despite the setback, I believe this competition has a lot to offer. It is my hope that with time over the coming year, we will find a solution in 2016. I take this opportunity to thank Setanta Sports for their partnership and support for the competition, and all of the clubs who have made efforts to work together."
