Towell targets high goal tally
Richie Towell put in a stomping performance on Monday night, netting a hat-trick against Galway United. Speaking after the game, the league’s top goalscorer said that he’s raring to keep up his current form and spoke in anticipation of Friday’s showdown with Cork City.
Towell has seven goals in the league so far to lead the way, followed by Mikey Drennan of Shamrock Rovers and fellow Lilywhite David McMillian on five apiece.
The Town star is frequently praised for his energy and fitness levels and believes that this is due to his hard work off the pitch. This year, he has an on-field agenda and is focusing on hitting the back of the net.
“I’ve seven in the league and I got one in the President’s Cup. That’s not a bad return for a midfielder. I’ve been working really hard on my shooting this year and it’s paying off, which I’m delighted with.”
Not one to rest on his laurels, the midfielder revealed he’d like to keep it up and pitch in with an impressive haul this year.
“I set myself very high standards. I set myself a target of 18 goals this year.”
The match on Friday against Cork City will be Dundalk’s third league game in eight days. At the end of this spell they will have played two of their main title rivals.
Last Friday things seemed to be going so well for the champions, as they led Shamrock Rovers 2-0 ten minutes into the second half. However, a chaotic five minutes later, a Rovers fightback (kick-started by a dubious penalty call) made it 2-2.
The Town didn’t let that upset their momentum too much and bounced back against Galway United with their fourth 3-0 win in nine games to stay top of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division. This means, of course, that the upcoming match against John Caulfield’s side is first placed against second.
When asked about media predictions ahead of that game, Towell revealed that they weren’t paying too much heed to media hype, but that his team was looking forward to the match.
“We don’t care about the media or other teams. All we care about is ourselves and we try to better ourselves every day.
“We go to win every game. We were beating Rovers 2-0 in their own back yard and we were unfortunate to go down. We’re going to do the same to Cork. We’re going to go at them, play the football that we always play and hopefully get our rewards.
“As players these are the games you want to play in…It’s on the television, on a great pitch. We’re two good teams. It’s a perfect match for a good game of football.”
