Shels strikers geared up for season
The finishing touches are being put on Shels’ preseason before another race for promotion to the Premier Division. With that in mind, some of Shels’ class of 2009 spoke with reporters about what they feel this season has in store.
Anto Flood was Shels’ talisman last year; when he performed, Shels’ won. And with the new talent acquired by manager Dermot Keely, Flood is confident this Shels’ side can go one better than last season’s:
“The big difference is the squad. There is competition all over the team. Everyone is on their toes. It has got a lot stronger. There’s very little difference between the players coming on and off the pitch compared to last year. We are a lot stronger this year.”
Paddy Madden, on loan from Bohs’, is relishing the chance to get some time on the football pitch, having impressed greatly so far in preseason.
“I’m just looking forward to playing first team football, that’s all I wanted to do. Looking forward to this season, hopefully get a few goals for myself, play well and get in the team.
Peter Hynes, signed from nearby Sporting Fingal, is confident that the strikers at Tolka Park all have what it takes to perform. “I don’t think there’ll be much pressure on us, whether myself Bisto or Paddy play. We’ll just be doing the best for the team. Whoever scores, scores for the team,” said Hynes.
While Reds legend Richie Baker is delighted to be back at the club. “Shels is in my Blood,” said the winger, who Shels’ signed from Drogheda.
“You play football because you want to win. I was in an awkward situation back up in Drogheda. It was either struggle in the Premier Division or come here and challenge for the First Division. I’m just happy to be here,” added Baker.
