Williams commits to Limerick for 2015

Limerick manager Martin Russell wants to see Robbie Williams perform a “leading role”, after the English left-back committed to the club for a third season on Thursday night.

Pontefract native Williams – who turned 30 in October – has made 48 competitive appearances since joining from Plymouth Argyle in February 2013.

He made a good impression on Russell after his appointment as boss in July and did enough to earn a new contract, which was penned late on Thursday.

“We’re delighted to have Robbie back in the group given his level of experience and playing ability,” Russell told LimerickFC.ie.

“He will have a major part to play this season. His experience was a factor to blend into the squad with a lot of young players coming through. I’m looking at him playing a leading role in the season ahead.

“He was unfortunate to get an injury at the tail-end of last season but after I came on board his performances were of a high standard and we want to keep him at that level.”

Williams is the first re-signing for 2015, along with club captain Shane Duggan, fellow midfielder Darragh Rainsford and centre-half Tony Whitehead who were already under contract.

The experienced defender joins new teammates midfielder Paul O’Conor – who signed last week from Sligo Rovers – goalkeeper Conor O’Donnell, versatile midfielder Seán Russell and forward Dean Clarke, all who penned deals on Thursday evening.

Pre-season training begins on Wednesday 7 January.
