Athlone begin their First Division preparations
Athlone Town have made their first steps on the way to what they hope will be a quick return to the Premier Division by re-signing three players.
New boss Eddie Wallace has begun his tenure as manager with the re-signings of captain Aidan Collins, wide midfielder Derek Doyle and young goalkeeper Patrick Dunican.
The 2015 season will be Collins’ third in Athlone colours. He was unlucky with injury this year, which restricted him to just six appearances, but he is raring to go for the next campaign. He told athlonetownfc.ie, “I’m delighted to sign back for the club, I’ve enjoyed the last two years with the club and the fans are super.” He then admitted that, “This year wasn’t a great season for the club but we are determined to bounce straight back and can’t wait for the challenge next season.”
Left midfielder, and occasional left back, Derek Doyle only came in during the midseason but he played his part in Athlone’s attempt to stay up, scoring twice in twelve games, as they battled until the last day of the season.
Although he didn’t make an appearance during the last campaign, u19 goalkeeper Patrick Dunican will be vying for the No.1 jersey next season, especially after Paul Skinner left to join local rivals Longford Town. Another departure from the club has been Kealan Dillon, who has followed former Athlone manager Keith Long to Bohemians.
