Friday night friendlies round-up
The goals flowed on Friday night as Cork City and Waterford United both ran out comfortable winners in their respective friendlies, while Alan Matthews first game in charge of Drogheda United ended in stalemate.
Cork City grabbed their second win of pre-season with a 3-0 victory over First Division Kildare County at Turners Cross in what was Paul Doolin's first home match in charge. Robert Mezeckis opened the scoring for the Leesiders on 24 minutes, with Dan Murray doubling the home side's advantage nine minutes later. Latvian striker Guntars Silagailis, signed by the club in midweek, added a third with 14 minutes left.
Waterford United also recorded a straight-forward victory on Friday night, over-coming Cork-based amateur outfit Mayfield United by four goals to one at Mayfield United Park. Willie John Kiely snatched a hat-trick for Stephen Henderson's men, with midfielder Paul McCarthy grabbing the other.
In the night's other fixture, First Division Shelbourne held Drogheda United to a scoreless draw at United Park in what was Alan Matthews' first game in charge at the club.
