Glynn happy with Marbella workout
Mervue United today continued their pre-season preparations in Benahavis, Spain, with a friendly match against Swiss 3rd division side FC Kusnacht. Although going down to a 1-0 defeat, manager Johnny Glynn was delighted with the chance to further assess his squad against unknown opposition.
Played in mid-afternoon following a tough morning training session, Mervue dominated the game for large spells but, with striker David Goldbey sidelined due to a slight ankle knock, were unable to break down their opponent's well-organised defence. Glynn made a total of nine substitutions during the game and was happy with how new signing Nigel Keady slotted into the heart of the defence alongside Eric Browne.
Describing the trip so far as "a terrific success", Glynn has cited the ability to control the conditions during the stay as invaluable for the season ahead. With external distractions reduced to a minimum, his youthful squad have been able to concentrate fully on the football and are eagerly awaiting the beginning of their League of Ireland adventure.
Mervue are using the same facility as Premiership strugglers West Brom, who were there earlier in the week. Glynn had the chance to discuss the facilities with their manager, Tony Mowbray, over breakfast on Mervue's first morning at the venue.
Mervue United begin their League of Ireland adventure on Friday, March 6th when they take on Athlone Town at Terryland Park. The club are selling season tickets for a recession-busting €75, working out at roughly €5 per game, and are looking for supporters from all areas of the city and county to get behind them in their first season.
