Athlone add nine players to squad
First Division outfit Athlone Town have confirmed the signing of no less than nine players for the new season.
Manager Brendan Place has managed to persuade four of last season's squad to re-sign for the club in the shape of central defender Des Hope, forward Noel McGee, midfielder Anthony Hayes and defender Robbie Hamm.
The Town have also agreed a deal to bring former Under 17 and under 19 Irish international Emeka Onwubiko to the club. Onwubiko spent last season at Bray Wanderers. The club have also picked up Ian Finlay from St Patrick's Athletic and Jamie Duffy from Sporting Fingal.
Meanwhile, former player Kevin Williamson has agreed to return to the club after spells with Monaghan United and Tullamore Town, while another former favourite, midfielder Damien Rushe, has also signed on for the 2009 season after spending last season with local rivals Longford Town.
The club, who take on Bohemians in a friendly at Lissywoolen on Saturday Afternoon, said that further signings are expected over the weekend.
