Ex-League of Ireland players Cross Channel - Week 8

Each week Extratime will look cross channel at how all the former League of Ireland players now plying their trade in the top four divisions of English football are getting on. As the weeks go on, we will extend this to former players in any league outside of this island.  

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE

Former Bohs goalkeeper Brian Murphy was on the bench for Q.P.R. in their 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday as fellow Irishman Richard Dunne scored an own goal.

International fullback Stephen Ward, another former Bohs player, and ex-Cork City defender Kevin Long were both unused substitutes in struggling Burnley’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of high-flying West Ham.

The ex-Cork City defender Damien Delaney had a nightmare performance against league leaders Chelsea as he was sent off in Crystal Palace’s 2-1 loss. Striker Kevin Doyle (ex-St Pats and Cork City) was an unused substitute.

Ex-Sligo Rovers fullback Seamus Coleman scored the third goal in Everton’s 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa, appearing alongside Republic of Ireland teammate James McCarthy.

Former Cork City striker Shane Long started in third-placed Southampton’s remarkable 8-0 defeat of Sunderland and was substituted in the 65^th minute.

Midfielders David Meyler (ex-Cork City) and Stephen Quinn (ex-St Pats) were not in Hull’s matchday squad for the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. Promising defender Brian Lenihan (ex-Cork City) was also not involved in the matchday squad.

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP

Conor Sammon (ex-UCD), on loan at Ipswich from Derby, played the full 90 minutes in Ipswich’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn. Daryl Murphy (ex-Waterford United) was not involved in the matchday squad.

Wes Hoolahan (ex-Shelbourne) started and was substituted after 57 minutes in Norwich’s 1-0 loss to relegation fodder Fulham. Hoolahan’s major involvement in the game was his goalline clearance from Dan Burn’s header.

Goalkeeper Aaron McCarey (ex-Monaghan United) was not involved in Wolves’ matchday squad for the 3-3 draw with Millwall. International goalkeeper David Forde (ex-Galway United and Derry City) played the full 90 minutes for Millwall as they fought back from 3-0 down to earn a 3-3 draw. Fellow Irishman Shaun Williams (ex-Drogheda United/Dundalk/Finn Harps/Sporting Fingal) was not involved in Millwall’s matchday squad.

Paul Corry (ex-UCD) did not make Sheffield Wednesday’s matchday squad as they were heavily defeated 3-0 by league leaders Watford.

Irish international Noel Hunt (ex-Shamrock Rovers and Waterford United) did not feature in Leeds’ 2-1 defeat to Rotherham.

International winger James McClean (ex-Derry City) played the full 90 minutes in Wigan’s 0-0 draw with Brentford. McClean received a booking and had a great chance to win the game for Wigan when he latched onto a crossfield ball. He connected with the ball well, but the strike was inches over the bar.

Northern Irish winger Paddy McCourt came on in the 30^th minute in Brighton’s 2-1 loss to Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough. The former Shamrock Rovers and Derry City man played a part in Brighton’s goal, whipping the ball in to the box where Adrian Colunga flicked the ball onto Gordon Greer’s head. McCourt also nearly had a goal for himself just after half-time. The elusive winger ghosted past three defenders and shot just wide.

SKY BET LEAGUE ONE

Midfielder Alan Browne played all 90 minutes and was on the scoresheet in Preston North End’s comfortable 2-0 win over Port Vale. The ex-Cork City midfielder ran through and beat goalkeeper Chris Neal with a deflected shot.

Former Drogheda United and Bohs midfielder Paul Keegan started and played the full 90 minutes in Doncaster Rovers’ 3-1 loss at the hands of Fleetwood Town. Keegan will be disappointed that he missed an opportunity from a set piece that could have given his team a chance of snatching a draw.

Eoin Doyle, formerly of Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers played the full 90 minutes in Chesterfield’s 1-1 draw with Oldham Athletic. However, the Irish attacker did not have much of an influence over proceedings. Jay O’Shea (ex Home Farm/Bray Wanderers/Galway United) came on in the 85^th minute but did not have the time to influence the outcome of the match.

The former Cork City player Brian Barry-Murphy was not included in the matchday squad for Rochdale’s 1-1 draw with Gillingham.

Kevin Dawson (ex-Sporting Fingal and Shelbourne) was a 75^th minute substitute in Yeovil’s 1-1 draw with Swindon Town, who finished the game with ten men.

Dave Mooney was not involved in Leyton Orient’s 0-0 draw with M.K. Dons. The former Shamrock Rovers, Longford Town and Cork City player did not feature in Orient’s matchday squad.

One-cap international Paddy Madden played all 90 minutes in Scunthorpe’s 1-1 draw with Colchester. The striker, who was prolific in Yeovil’s promotion campaign two seasons ago, spurned a number of chances and was booked towards the end of the first half.

Former Finn Harps and Derry City man Stephen McLaughlin, on loan at Notts County from Nottingham Forest, played the full 90 minutes in his side’s enthralling 5-3 victory over Crawley.

SKY BET LEAGUE TWO

Ex-Cork City defender Alan Bennett started and went on to complete the full 90 minutes as AFC Wimbledon slumped to a 2-0 defeat to league leaders Wycombe.

Carlisle United man Gary Dicker (formerly of UCD) completed the match in Carlisle United’s 1-0 loss at the hands of Plymouth Argyle but Daniel Kearns (ex-Dundalk) was not in the Carlisle squad. Carl McHugh (ex-Dundalk) completed the match for Plymouth.

Jimmy Keohane (ex-Wexford Youths) and Graham Cummins (ex-Cobh Ramblers, Waterford United and Cork City) both played in Exeter’s 1-1 draw with Southend, with Cummins bagging a goal to seal a draw.  Gary Deegan (formerly of Shelbourne, Kilkenny City, Longford Town, Galway United and Bohs) started and finished the match for Southend.

Seán Maguire (ex-Waterford United), on loan at Accrington Stanley from West Ham, faced David McAllister (ex-Drogheda United, St Pats and Shelbourne) of Stevenage. Maguire lasted 64 minutes and McAllister lasted the entire match.

Pádraig Amond (ex-Shamrock Rovers/Sligo Rovers) played the entirety of Morecambe’s 2-0 win over Burton.

Enda Stevens (ex-UCD/St Pats/Shamrock Rovers), on loan at Northampton Town from Aston Villa, played the full game in the loss to Cheltenham Town.

Kevin Feely (ex-Bohs) was booked as he came on as a 54^th minute sub in Newport’s dramatic 1-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge.
