Byrne hattrick has Bohs in seventh heaven

The proceeds of the game may have went to charity, but Bohemians expressed little good will on Wednesday night as they romped to a 7-0 victory over Leinster Senior League outfit Glebe North.

The match, which took place at Glebe North's ground in Market Green, Balbriggan, was a benefit game for the Martin Finnegan Benefit Fund. Finnegan, one of the best motorcyclists ever to come out of Ireland, was killed in a race in May last year.

Owen Heary opened the scoring for the Gyspies inside the opening half hour, before Jason Byrne doubled their advantage just minutes later. Recent signing Brian Shelly grabbed his second goal in as many games on 38 minutes, with Byrne adding a fourth on the stroke of half-time.

Substitute Neale Fenn made it five just before the hour-mark, before Byrne completed his hattrick eight minutes later. Fenn rounded off an emphatic performance with his second goal of the night in the dying minutes.

Elsewhere on Wednesday night, St Patrick's Athletic fought back from two goals down to draw with a Chelsea XI at Richmond Park. Fabio Borini fired the English side ahead on 24 minutes, before Frank Nouble added a second just after the re-start.

An Alan Cawley free-kick from just outside the area pulled Jeff Kenna's men back into the game on 67 minutes and three minutes later the former-Bray midfielder turned provider, crossing for trialist Gints Freimanis to fire home to grab an encouraging draw for the Inchicore side.

Four goals were also shared over at Terryland Park, where Galway United entertained Cork City. Davin O’Neill fired Cork into the lead on 48 minutes with a fine volley from 12-yards, but their lead was to last a mere three minutes with Jay O'Shea restoring parity from the penalty spot after trialist Declan Edwards had been felled in the box by Colin Healy.

Healy then attoned for his error when his cross was headed home by Dan Murray on 54 minutes to restore Cork's one goal advantage. However, the home side snatched the draw with eight minutes left on the clock when Vinny Faherty held off a couple of Cork defenders before shooting past Dan Connor.

In the night's other games, Wexford Youths held Dundalk to a scoreless draw at Ferrycarrig Park, while Shelbourne ran out 3-0 winners against Liffey Pearse with Anto Flood and Peter Hynes among the goalscorers.

Thursday night's action will see Monaghan United take on Bray Wanderers at Rathnew.
