Dundalk announce Wexford date
Dundalk have set a pre-season friendly with Wexford Youths for Ferrycarrig Park next Wednesday night (kick-off 8pm). The game will be the Lilywhites' first outing of the new year after their preparations for the coming season were badly hit in the past week with the cancellations of three friendlies.
Last Tuesday's warm-up games against Lisburn Distillery, and later Dungannon Swifts, both bit the dust as a result of the cold snap, while near neighbours Drogheda United were unable to fulfil this weekend's annual Jim Malone Cup match due to a lack of players.
It now appears that Dundalk, with a whole new squad, will have just four friendlies before the league begins on 6 March, as their original date with Dungannon, 24 February, which was announced last month, has also been called off.
Three days after their trip to Wexford, Dundalk will travel to Sligo, before making the short journey to Monaghan on the penultimate day of the month. Two days later, the Lilywhites will complete their pre-season programme when they play their first home game of 2009, as they welcome Glasgow Celtic to Oriel Park on Sunday 1 March.
The club, incidentally, today reported that a quarter of the new surface is already laid at the Carrick Road venue.
