Raheny register second Champions League win

Raheny United 2 - 0 NSA Sofia

Raheny United have stepped one foot closer to qualifying for the 2014/2015 UEFA Women’s Champions League. The Dubliners faced second seeded hopefuls NSA Sofia of Bulgaria.

Raheny started off the game the more dominant of the two teams but as the game progressed NSA Sofia began to get some chances of their own on the board.

Raheny took a 1 - 0 lead on the nick of half time through Irish U19 International Clare Shine. An assist coming from Irish Senior International Siobhan Killeen meant the girls scored at the perfect time as they took a welcome breather from the scorching 30 degree heat at Cluj-Napoca stadium in Romania.

Raheny started the second half with an early goal five minutes after the restart to stretch their lead. Clare Shine again getting her name on the score card thanks to an assist by Irish U19 team mate Katie McCabe.

Raheny made use of their subs bench in the second half when Captain Rebecca Creagh was replaced by Lauren Dwyer and Shauna Newman replaced Clare Conlon. Goal hero Clare Shine was replaced by Danielle Sheehy on the 85th minute. Overall Raheny had over ten attempts on goal in the game and with this victory now sit atop of Group B with two wins and one game remaining.

Next up for Raheny is the lowest ranked team in the group Hibernians FC of Malta on Thursday, August 14th at 16:00 Irish time.

All eyes will be on Romania Thursday in a hope for Raheny to become the 2nd Irish women’s club to qualify for the final stages of the Champions League. Raheny’s close rivals Peamount United are the only club to have done so in the 2011/2012 campaign when they drew Paris Saint Germain in the round 32.
