Shaun Kelly signs for Derry City

The defender joins the club from fellow Premier Division side Limerick on a deal until the end of the season. The 24-year old left Limerick for the Candystripes in order to be closer to his family.

Shaun joined Limerick from Galway United midway through the 2011 season. The club finished in a close 3rd in the table that season, only three points behind title winners Cork City. In the 2012 season, Limerick went one better and finished top of the league. Shaun played in nearly all the games and finished with twenty four appearances to his name as Limerick were promoted.

In Limerick’s first season back in the top flight, Shaun played twenty five times and managed to score twice as Limerick secured 7th place. In the last game of the season, in what turned out to be a disappointing 6-0 loss, against Derry City, Shaun was given the captian’s armband.

Limerick manager Martin Russell told limerickfc.ie that, “Shaun has been a great servant to the club over the past four seasons but unfortunately due to personal circumstances he has decided to move back home.”

The recently installed manager also said, “We’re unlucky to see him go but we understand his reasons. We thank him for what he has contributed to the club and we wish him all the very best in the future.”

So far this season, Shaun has made 14 appearances for the SuperBlues and will be a major loss at the right back position for the club.

Limerick’s loss is Derry City’s gain and this news follows on the back of a great 6-1 win over UCD in the league. It is also one in, one out for Derry after they confirmed that David Elebert had been released by the club yesterday. The defender had been frustrated by injuries during this season and only made three appearances.
