In Focus: Marta (Brazil)
UEFA have released a list of players in the running for the 2013/14 UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe Award. WNL.ie reporter Rachael Stack will be taking a closer look at each player on the list. This article focuses on Brazilian player Marta Vieira da Silva.
Marta Vieira da Silva is a 28 year old female professional soccer player from Brazil. Marta is one of the leading women in women’s football. Between the years 2006 and 2010, Marta was named the FIFA Women’s Player of the year for five consecutive years running. Marta was a runner up in the last two FIFA Player of the year award ceremonies with Nadine Angerer (2013) and Abby Wambach (2012) taken top spots.
Marta has recently transferred to Swedish league champions FC Rosengård, formerly known as LdB FC Malmö. Marta joins the club from Tyresö FF who withdrew from the Damallsvenskan due to financial trouble. Marta’s last game for the club was a bitter sweet game as they lead VFL Wolfsburg 2 -0 at half time in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final to eventually lose 4 – 3 with Marta scoring two goals on the night.
Marta was chosen as one of six ambassadors for the 2014 FIFA World cup in Brazil. As both an individual and at club level Marta has found success but Marta is also a huge success on the International stage. Marta has played for Brazil in the last three consecutive World Cup’s and Olympic games winning the following:

Marta is currently the All Time FIFA Women’s Wold cup top goal scorer joint with retired German International Birgit Prinz with another World Cup around the corner at Canada 2015. Marta is sure to be looking to add her name to the history books again.
