In Focus: Lena Lotzen (Bayern Munich)

UEFA have released a list of players in the running for the 2013/14 UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe Award. WNL.ie reporter Rachael Stack will be taking a closer look at each player on the list. This article focuses on Bayern Munich player Lena Lotzen.

Lena Lotzen is 20 year old professional soccer player from Germany. Lena is a surprise package in this year’s UEFA European shortlist because she is the only nominee who did not compete in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Lena currently plays her club football for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. She is with Bayern since the 2010 season. Bayern finished 4th in this year’s Bundesliga behind Turbine Potsdam (3rd), FFC Frankfurt (2nd) and champions VFL Wolfsburg.

Internationally, Lena plays for her national side Germany. Whilst representing Germany, Lena has won the 2011 U19 UEFA European Championship and was crowned the tournaments Golden boot recipient as top goal scorer. In 2012 Lena was part of the Germany team that were narrowly defeated 1 - 0 by the United States. She was awarded the Adidas Bronze shoe for her 6 goals and 1 assist at the tournament.

In 2013, Lena won the UEFA Women’s European Championship with Germany at only age 19. Most Irish people may know Lena for her recent visit to Ireland when she poked Germany ahead 2 – 1 at Tallaght Stadium in Germany’s 3 -2 victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier’s.

The future is bright for Lena being so young and with two strong teams behind her. She is sure to get her name shortlisted for many more prestigious awards. You can watch her in action in the Bundesliga via DFB TV.
