St Pats to play Chelsea XI at Richmond Park
Premiership side Chelsea are set to play St. Pats in what should be quite an entertaining pre-season friendly in Richmond Park on Wednesday 18th February.
Today St Pat’s announced the tie, which should provide Jeff Kenna’s side with a good test ahead of the new League of Ireland season. While it hardly looks likely that stars such as Hilario, Salomon Kalou and Branislav Ivanovic…sorry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho, will be present, it does pit St Pats against a side in mid-season, and therefore at the height of their fitness, one would presume.
“Chelsea are a massive club, they’ve invested hugely in their youth teams and their reserve side is full of youth internationals many of whom have already played for the first team. We’ve strengthened our squad in recent weeks, we’ve been training hard and a match against a quality team like this will be a real test for us,” said Kenny.
It’s the first time in recent years that a Chelsea team have travelled to Dublin and CEO Richard Sadlier is looking forward to welcoming them to Richmond Park.
“Chelsea have a strong support base in Ireland and the match will be a chance for many of their fans to come along and see the next generation of Chelsea stars in action. It will also be a chance for St Pats to showcase our own talent and the growing quality of the League of Ireland”.
