In Focus: Nilla Fischer (VFL Wolfsburg)

UEFA have released a list of players in the running for the 2013/14 UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe Award. WNL.ie reporter Rachael Stack will be taking a closer look at each player on the list. This article focuses on VFL Wolfsburg player Nilla Fischer.   

 

Nilla Fischer is a 29 year old professional soccer player from Sweden. Nilla who played most of her career as a defensive midfielder seen her International role change when the 2012 FIFA Women's Coach of year and ex Swedish International Pia Sundhage took charge of the Swedish national side.

 

Sundhage seen something different in Nilla and moved her into a centre back role. Since making the switch Fischer won the Adidas Silver Boot for her three outstanding goals and was chosen as part of the All Star team of Euro 2013 that was hosted in Sweden. Nilla signed for VFL Wolfsburg from Swedish team Linköping shortly after the Euro's. Since joining the team she has helped Wolfsburg clinch the double in a dramatic finish to her first season at the club.

 

Wolfsburg won the Champions League final in a hard fought 4 - 3 game against Swedish side Tyresö FF. Trailing 2 - 0 at half time, Wolfsburg came out of the traps early in the second half with two goals in quick succession and were crowned back to back Champions League champions.

 

It was the final day of the season against title contenders FFC Frankfurt when Nilla won the Bundesliga. Another tight game in front of over 12,000 fans. Wolfsburg took the lead and had one hand on the trophy at half time but the sides found themselves level in the second half. It was Alexandra Popp who delivered the club's double on the 89th minute when she scored to seal a 2 - 1 victory for Wolfsburg.

 



Nilla also won this year's Swedish player of the year award and has been previously nominated as one of ten players short listed for the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or. You can follow Nilla on Twitter - @fischer_nilla and watch her in action in the Bundesliga via DFB TV.
