'History Girls' looking to add another chapter

Now known as the ‘History Girls’, the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under 19’s are hoping to add another chapter to the UEFA European Championships logbook on Monday night.

Following back-to-back wins over Spain and England, Dave Connell’s team take on Sweden in their final Group B game in Oslo, Norway, where a draw would be enough to book a semi-final spot.

Despite never featuring in this tournament before, Ireland have gotten off to a terrific start with their organisation, teamwork, and, perhaps most importantly, character shining through.

Confidence may be high, but nobody in the camp is getting carried away with Keeva Keenan – who scored the winner against England – insisting that the focus is simply on winning the next game.

“We know what they are like so we know what to expect, but we can’t go in being too cocky because we have the two wins behind us. We have to steady ourselves and focus on getting the win,” said Keenan.

The reaction to Ireland’s two victories has seen goalscorers Keenan, Savannah McCarthy, and Clare Shine all trend on Twitter, while YouTube hits and FaceBook likes have reached incredible levels.

Yet, this team remains grounded as they eye a place in the final four. Captain Chloe Mustaki knows that nothing is guaranteed yet and believes they must keep their momentum rolling.

“Hopefully we are making the nation proud. Every single game is really, really tough and you don’t have time for a lapse of concentration. It’s great to be the underdogs coming into these Championships and to prove everyone wrong. Hopefully now we can get three wins,” said Mustaki.
