Cold snap claims more friendlies
Dundalk, Derry City, Bray Wanderers and Longford Town have all had their pre-season preparations disrupted by the cold snap with the cancellation of friendlies which were scheduled for this evening (Tuesday).
Dundalk's meeting with Lisburn Distillery, set for tonight, bit the dust yesterday but was quickly replaced by a trip to Dungannon Swifts, pending a 1pm inspection. The pitch, however, was deemed unplayable this afternoon; though Sean Connor's side are still bound for Stangmore Park in two weeks for a game which was arranged last month. In further bad news, the Lilywhites' Malone Cup clash with neighbours Drogheda United, which was due to take place at United Park this Saturday, is also in doubt.
Bray too have been hit by the bad weather in the past week as two of their friendlies have been cancelled. Last Saturday, the Seagulls were due to face Monaghan United at Goldenball but the meeting fell victim to the weather, and now tonight's friendly with Longford Town, which was switched from Rathnew to the Carlisle Grounds to give it a chance of going ahead, has also been wiped out. The midlanders are less affected by this news as they had a warm-up match away to Westport United at the weekend; a game, incidentally, which they won 3-1.
Derry, meanwhile, have had a very productive pre-season to date, despite also having two games cancelled. The Candystripes were in Spain last week where they beat Danish side Esbjerg, before they returned home to face Shelbourne at the Brandywell last Friday. That game was called off due to the weather, however, Stephen Kenny quickly arranged a fresh friendly against Letterkenny Rovers on the same night. City continued their 100% record there with a facile 5-1 win, but their preparations have again been slightly affected by this evening's trip to Institute being cancelled. In other news, Derry have announced that Saturday's visit of Sporting Fingal has been put forward 24 hours to Friday night.
Three games, however, will be played this evening. Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne and Mervue United all lineout for the first time this year, while Galway United continue their build-up to the new season after drawing 1-1 with Limerick at the weekend. Rovers are in the North to meet Newry City, Shelbourne make the short trip to Scribblestown to face LSL outfit Phoenix, while Mervue and Galway go head-to-head at Fahy's Field.
