UEFA announce 2013/14 UEFA Best Women's Player in Europe Award Nominees

UEFA have released a list of the players in the running for the 2013/14 UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe Award.

Germany’s captain Nadine Angerer won the inaugural award last year when she faced finalists Sweden’s Lotta Schelin and German team mate Lena Goessling.

The shortlist was voted for by the coaches of the eight teams that took part in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.

The shortlist contains 11 players instead of the usual 10 because two players on the list have been amounted to equal points.

The nominees are as follows:

Verónica Boquete (Spain, Tyresö FF – now at Portland Thorns FC)

Nilla Fischer (Sweden, VfL Wolfsburg)

Lena Goessling (Germany, VfL Wolfsburg)

Nadine Kessler (Germany, VfL Wolfsburg)

Lena Lotzen (Germany, FC Bayern München)

Marta (Brazil, Tyresö FF)

Martina Müller (Germany, VfL Wolfsburg)

Alexandra Popp (Germany, VfL Wolfsburg)

Christen Press (United States, Tyresö FF – now at Chicago Red Stars)

Lotta Schelin (Sweden, Olympique Lyonnais)

Caroline Seger (Sweden, Tyresö FF – now at Paris Saint-Germain)

The list will be narrowed down to three finalists by the media and an announcement will be made on Thursday 14 August 2014 of who the three finalists of the award are.

Over the course of the next few days, WNL.ie’s Rachael Stack will take a closer look at each of the nominees.
