Cork plans hit as Derry win again
Cork City's pre-season plans were hit again on Friday night as another of their friendlies was cancelled. However, Derry City's preparations continued apace as they hammered Letterkenny Rovers 5-1 in Donegal.
Just hours after announcing that their friendly with Galway United at Terryland Park later this month was called off, Cork confirmed that next weekend's meeting with neighbours Cobh Ramblers at Saint Colman's Park has also bitten the dust as Cobh are "not prepared yet". The game, though, could take place in the coming weeks.
Cork, now, have only two friendlies set. The first of those comes today as they play Stephen Henderson's new-look Waterford United at Bishopstown (kick-off 3pm). The Leesiders are also due to play Kildare County at the same venue on Saturday 21 February (kick-off 1pm).
In contrast, Derry, the only League of Ireland team to so far have a warm-up game this year, made it two wins in four days last night as they easily defeated Letterkenny at the Aura Sports Arena.
In icy conditions, the Candystripes were in cruise control from early on as goals from Gareth McGlynn, Mark Farren and new signing Liam Kearney, who made his debut on home soil, gave them a 3-0 half-time lead. Letterkenny pulled one back after the break, however, a strike from Ciaran Martyn and another from Farren saw Derry run out easy winners.
With two wins from two, after they also defeated Danish side Esbjerg in Spain during the past week, Derry continue their build-up to the new season next Tuesday when they make the trip to Irish League outfit Institute. The Candystripes then play their first home friendly of the year next Saturday as Sporting Fingal are the visitors to the Brandywell.
