Williams becomes Mathews' first signing
Drogheda United have confirmed the signing of former Shelbourne goalkeeper Steve Williams.
Williams, a Welsh native, arrived on the League of Ireland stage in 1997 when he signed for Dundalk from Notts County after previously spending four years at Cardiff City.
Despite an impressive two seasons at Oriel Park, however, Williams was unable to help the Louth club beat the drop and, in 1999, he moved on to Shelbourne where he enjoyed magnificent success as he won five Premier Division titles and one FAI Cup in eight seasons.
Since leaving the Reds at the end of 2006, he has spent one-season spells at both Bray Wanderers and Sporting Fingal. However, after being released by Fingal, the 34-year-old now looks set to end his long and distinguished career at Drogheda. He is new manager Alan Mathews' first signing at United Park, after the former Longford Town boss was unveiled as the Boynesiders' new chief on Wednesday.
"Steve is an experienced goalkeeper," Mathews told droghedaunited.ie, "and experience is something that we will need in abundance as we assemble a squad for the new season."
