Martin Russell has this evening been confirmed as the new manager of UCD. The former Saint Patrick's Athletic midfielder will most likely lead the Students into First Division battle this year following their relegation from the top flight last October.

Russell has been at the college club since 2005, initially as first-team coach and most recently as assistant manager to Pete Mahon, who stepped down from his position earlier this month after nearly five years at the helm.

Speaking on his appointment, Russell said: "I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to continue working with the club and hope to build on the tremendous work carried out by my predecessor Pete Mahon. My initial focus is to continue to strengthen the club's Scholarship programme and develop a team that will be able to challenge for honours."

Russell takes over from Mahon, who resigned from the Belfield Bowl hot-seat last week. Upon leaving, Mahon stated: "I am disappointed to leave UCD. It is a club with great foundations and I am happy to have played my role in the development of young players at the club. I wish them every success for the future."
