Cliff Byrne signs for Derry City

Former Scunthorpe United captain and Republic of Ireland youth international Clifford Byrne has signed for Derry City. Byrne began his career at Sunderland but failed to feature for the first team.

In 2002, after three years with the Mackems, he went on loan to Scunthorpe United, and signed a permanent deal at the end of the season. He went on to captain the side and made 266 games for the club leading them to the League One play offs in 2009.

In 2012 Byrne left the Iron to sign for Oldham Athletic. Ironically, Byrne scored his first goal for his new club against Scunthorpe. In September 2013, he re-joined the Iron on loan. He returned to his parent club before having his contract cancelled by mutual agreement in January 2014.

Byrne is the sixth signing at the Brandywell since Roddy Collins took control joining Roddy Collins Jnr, Enda Curran, Danny Ventre, Mark Stewart and Ciaran Gallagher at the Candystripes.
