Nzuzi - There's a lot more to come
Limerick FC have confirmed the re-signing of the versatile Patrick Nzuzi, who says he has “a lot more” to give having found his feet in the League of Ireland last season.
The 21-year-old joined the Superblues last March having impressed on their pre-season tour of Scotland, after he had been at Newcastle United since 2005.
Nzuzi went on to make 24 appearances in all competitions as Limerick finished seventh in their first term back in the Premier Division in 19 years.
Now, the DR Congo underage international is hoping to kick on from where he left off after penning a fresh deal on Tuesday, having gotten to the pace of the league in his first season.
“I’m delighted to sign again. From the second we broke off for the off-season, my mind was always on coming back,” Nzuzi told LimerickFC.ie.
“It was only a matter of agreeing on something between both me and the club so I’m glad we finally got to there.
“I loved it last year. It’s a great league to be playing in and the support I got from the fans last year was really nice. The league was quicker than I expected so it took a while to get going.
“But once I did, I enjoyed it. I think with the help of the supporters, I settled in well and with the help of the Gaffer as well – he had faith in me from the start. That got me through.
“The signing I was most excited about was Samuel Oji, and Shane Tracy signed in the last couple of days. That shows you that the club is going places – it’s exciting.
“We’re hoping to push on this year. We marked our stamp in the league last year; I thought as a team we did well and we’ve got to build from there and push onwards and upwards.
“There’s a lot more to come from me. I was thinking that to myself on the way back down here – I gave all I could but I don’t think I performed as well as I know I can. I’m looking to go out there from the Bray game and give it my best.”
Nzuzi is comfortable across the back four and made many of his appearances at right-back last year. However, manager Stuart Taylor has targeted a midfield role for him this time around.
“I spoke to the Gaffer and I think it’s going to be a midfield role this year,” Patrick said. “I’ve played there for the national team so I’m comfortable there.
“To be honest, wherever I play, whether it’s right-back or anywhere across the back, it doesn’t matter. As long as I’m on the pitch and helping the team out, that’s the main thing.
“I like midfield. You get a lot more of the ball and then you’ve got more influence on the game. It’s a position I’m comfortable with.”
Asked if he had settled into the city well, Nzuzi added: “I love Limerick. I always compare it to Newcastle. It’s a nice city and there are some nice people around here.”
