Odhiambo signs for Sligo Rovers
Sligo Rovers have announced the signing of former Kenyan International Eric Odhiambo.
The versatile 24-year-old joins following the expiration of his contract at Hereford United earlier this month, whom he joined after a move to Rovers in the summer fell through due to a registration issue with previous club Denizlispor in Turkey.
He has also played for Leicester City, Southend United, Dundee United, Brentford United and most notably Inverness Caledonian Thistle where he enjoyed an impressive two season stint from 2009 to 2011.
Speaking to sligorovers.com, Rovers boss Ian Baraclough discussed his previous attempt to sign Odhiambo, the player’s time at Hereford United and believes his latest acquisition can become a firm fan favourite at The Showgrounds.
“We wanted Eric in July. Red tape with FIFA stopped the move until they eventually game him the okay but it was too late to sign him then. I've kept tabs on him, I watched him in England in the off-season. His style will suit our game and philosophy. He can play as a striker, in the hole or on the wing. He is good with his feet and has an excellent football brain.
"I first noticed him with the Leicester youth team. He did very well for Terry Butcher at Inverness in Scotland. At 24 he is a good age to get his career thriving again. We give players the chance to find their way again and it has happened with many players over the last few years. Eric is delighted to have the opportunity to play regular football.
“Hereford played in a way that didn’t suit him. They operated with two big front men and launched the ball forward. They played him on the wing for 20 minutes hoping he would make an impact. He will enjoy coming here and how we play. He knows how the club works having been here for a few weeks in July.
"I am open-minded on where he will fit in the team, there are a few permutations and we will try things out in pre-season. I expect him to be lively in training because he was playing league football up to three weeks ago. If we get Eric to 100%, our supporters will really take to him.”
