Dunne completes first wave of Galway signings

New Airtricity League club, Galway FC, made a little bit of history this week as they completed their first ever club signings. First to sign to the newly formed club on Thursday were former Mervue United players Stephen Walsh and Jason Molloy. On Friday Marc Ludden, Martin Conneely, and Noel Varley signed on for the Tribesman whilst on Saturday, Paul Sinnott joined and was also named club captain.

Dunne has been quick to sound out both Mervue Utd and Salthill Devon players from both clubs squads from the season just ended and he made the versatile Walsh (23) and winger Molloy (25) his first captures.

Both are very experienced League of Ireland performers having also previously played with Galway United in the Premier Division, while both were key members of Johnny Glynn’s Mervue squad who finished third in the First Division in 2013.

A crowd favourite Molloy scored seven times for Mervue last season in 28 appearances highlighted by two cracking goals in both legs of the Promotion Play-off with Longford Town. He made a total of 82 appearances in three seasons for Mervue scoring 16 goals so will be a valuable capture for Dunne. He also came through the underage structure at Mervue before he joined Galway United.

Walsh is one of those players every manager should have, can play in a variety of positions without ever looking out of place. Walsh played 25 times for Mervue last season playing between defence and up front were he bagged seven goals and also even made an appearance in goals after both Mervue keepers saw red away to Cobh last April. Walsh made a total of 49 appearances for Mervue scoring eight goals over two seasons with the club.

Twenty three year old Ludden made more than 100 appearances for Mervue United whilst Conneely, 23, brother of Sligo Rovers' star Seamus, was a key figure for Mervue during the past three campaigns. Midfielder Varley, who will be 23 on December 29, has also impressed in the Mervue colours.

Twenty seven year old Sinnott has previously played for Galway United and Mervue United. Sinnott had a stint as Galway United skipper and Dunne is happy to give him the role again.

"Paul has proven with Galway United and Mervue that he has the required leadership qualities." Dunne said.

"He is a consistent and steady player with the right qualities to do this job well for us.

"I've been impressed in my meetings with him.  In this short period he has shown himself to be a good character.

"Our squad will have plenty of youth so it is important that we have a few older, experienced guys like Paul to help them through the challenges that await."

Dunne is happy with the players that are being recruited for the 2014 season.

"It's good that we have started to sign players and it will leave us in a good position when training starts.

"I'm very happy with the players we are signing. They have all performed to a high standard for Mervue.

"All the players seem genuinely excited about joining a Galway team that will be playing at Eamonn Deacy Park."
