Cork City have this morning announced the re-signing of defender Neal Horgan for the 2014 season, bringing to 16 the number of players John Caulfield has tied down for the next year.

Horgan originally joined Cork City in the late 90s and is well acquainted with the new management team at Turner’s Cross having played alongside his new manager Caulfield and the club’s coaches Billy Woods and John Cotter during their playing careers.

With first-hand experience of Horgan’s abilities and influence, manager John Caulfield believes the 34-year-old defender’s experience will be important next season.

“He has been a great servant to the club. He has won the league, won the cup and he is passionate about the club. He gives us valuable experience, he can play in a number of positions, but he is also a real team player, and that is what we need at the club.”

Like many of his teammates, Horgan is looking forward to the new season and shared his manager’s enthusiasm.

“Having spoken to John, I think we will be competitive. I think there will be a good spirit in the team and I am excited for the start of the season. I would also like to thank my employers, Healy O’Connor Solicitors, for their help in facilitating me signing back for the club.”

“I think John will bring a spirit, like there was when I was coming to watch City in the 80’s and the early 90’s. I played with John, so I know what he is like; he will be very motivated, and he will want us to enjoy it as well. You can see it when you talk to people, they are excited about it, and I think John is the perfect candidate to push us on now.”

Horgan has won the Premier Division, First Division, FAI Cup and Setanta Cup with the Rebel Army, and needs just the League Cup to complete the set and join Declan “Fabio” O’Brien in achieving this remarkable feat.

Further movement is expected at Cork City in the coming days with Daryl Horgan’s switch to Dundalk set to be announced while Danny Murphy is expected to re-sign for 2014 at the club with the player having tweeted that the sides had reached an agreement last week.
