Waterford United have appointed Tommy Griffin as first team manager for the 2014 season.

Griffin took control of first team affairs last season after the departure of Paul O'Brien and almost steered the club into the promotion play-offs. Griffin, the clubs U19 manager for the previous seasons, will be assisted by David Breen.

The club unveiled Griffin at a fans forum on Thursday night, where Griffin laid out his short term and long term vision for the club. Griffin confirmed that striker Vinny Sullivan has re-signed and will captain the team next season.

"I am very pleased and honoured to be officially confirmed as first team boss," said Griffin. "I am looking forward to working with everybody at the club and I want to continue the process I started with the Under 19 setup where Waterford United are known for their attractive football.

"I have been working hard to attract good players to the club and I am happy that we have managed to confirm the return of a number of players from last season.

The new manager confirmed that players have already committed themselves to the squad for next season, with Griffin pointed out that it would be a mainly locally-focussed squad for the coming season.

Gavin Kavanagh, Conor Whittle, Kevin O'Connor, Paul Quilty, Conor Meade, Rob McLarney, Philip Drohan have all re-signed for the club as well as captain Vinny Sullivan,  with Shane Murray (Bohemians), Gary Delaney (Wexford Youths) and Thomas Croke (Wexford Youths) also joining the club.

The club is expected to face Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Cork City during their pre-season preparations, with the games and dates subject to FAI approval.
