Gearoid Morrissey pens new deal at City

Cork City have this morning announced the re-signing of Gearóid Morrissey on a one year deal.

The 22-year-old local becomes the latest member of the 2013 squad to sign up to manager John Caulfield’s cause, bringing to 14 the number of players Caulfield has signed up for next year already.

Having joined in 2010 from Blackburn Rovers academy, Morrissey was a key player in the Leesider’s First Division title in 2011. Since then the Ireland underage international has rarely missed a game in the Premier Division and has attracted interest from other clubs in the league as well as the UK.

Though he only scored two league goals last season, the young midfielder assisted more goals than any other Cork City player (seven), and the new contract for Morrissey will be a welcome boost for the Rebel Army after the news that Daryl Horgan will not be returning for 2014.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, Morrissey was looking forward to the new season and in particular keen to add some more goals to his game.

“I’m glad it is sorted now and I can focus on the season ahead. I know sometimes you have to do what is needed for the team, but I want to nail down a place in the centre of midfield and score more goals.”

“I’m really excited about what John has in mind for the coming season. I think he is determined and the signings he has made show that. I think next year is going to be really good. The sky is the limit. Why can’t we be challenging for all of the cups and the league? I think we are more than capable of having a right good go.”

Also speaking to CorkCityFC.ie on the signing, manager John Caulfield believes that Morrissey has even more to give to the club in the coming season.

“We all know what a fantastic player he is. He is a top player with great potential, and I hope he will be an even better player than he has been already for us. I feel there is a lot more in his game, I certainly think he can develop and score goals for us from midfield.

“I know he has played out wide, but I feel that in the centre is where he is at his best and there are a lot of areas where he can improve. He is very skilful and strong, and I think with a bit more coaching on getting him into the box and on finishing he can get goals for us as well.”
