Danny North re-signs with Sligo Rovers
Sligo Rovers have confirmed the re-signing of FAI Cup hero Danny North.
The striker, who came off the bench to score two goals and set up the winner, put pen to paper on a new deal that will see him remain at The Showgrounds for the 2014 season.
Since his arrival from St. Patrick's Athletic in November 2011, the 26-year-old has scored 24 goals in 46 appearances, winning the aforementioned FAI Cup and an Airtricity League title in that time.
The Grimsby native spoke to sligorovers.com following the signing of his new contract and revealed he is eager to get a good pre-season campaign under his belt after missing almost a year of football following a serious knee injury in 2012.
“I’m very happy to have my future secured. I like it here and we’re hoping for a good start to next season. It is looking positive, the gaffer has put together a good group of players already. That has to be the case because as he says we want to challenge on all fronts and make that breakthrough in Europe next year if we can as well.
“For a team like Sligo Rovers, it has to be the intention to try to win the league. The FAI Cup final was a great way to finish off the year. All of the players felt that it wouldn’t have been a successful season if we didn’t win the Cup. The manner in which we did it was unbelievable. I think it will help us going into next year. It is a fresh start as well with some new faces in the squad.
“The middle of the season cost us last year and we had some injuries. We know it will be tough to win things because other clubs will strengthen as well but we’re going out to try and do so.
“I’ve scored goals since I’ve come here. There are good players around me who create chances and it’s up to me or whoever is up front to put them away. With a good pre-season under my belt I hope I can hit the ground running from the start like I did in 2012. I missed the guts of a year because of injury so I’m really looking forward to next season. I’m buzzing to stay, I’ve enjoyed my time here and I can’t wait for that first game next season already.”
