Nineteen year old John Kavanagh is the latest player to sign on the dotted line for next season at Cork City.

Having graduated from the much lauded Under 19 team where he was captain, Kavanagh made the step up to the first team in 2013. After featuring a couple of times earlier in the season, Kavanagh broke into the first eleven with six games to go and nailed down his spot for the remaining six games.

Primarily a full-back, the youngster has also played in midfield for the Leesiders, and it is expected that he will receive a lot more game time in 2014.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, Kavanagh was looking forward to next season.

“I’m delighted. I was happy enough with how last year went and I am hoping to get a run in the team again next season. John is building a good squad and the signings are a signal of his intent. There are some big names coming in, so it is all positive.”

Also speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, manager John Caulfield was happy with the re-signing of the former Ringmahon Rangers player.

“John is another young lad who has come through from our Under 19 team. He broke through into the first team last year and played a number of games, so this is a big season for him. He has great potential, he is quick, tough and good defensively, and we hope he can establish himself in the team.”

Kavanagh’s re-signing comes hot on the heels of Friday’s capture of Michael Rafter from Derry City as Caulfield prepares for his first season in charge.

Speaking to Extratime.ie last week, Caulfield revealed that he will now concentrate on re-signing the remaining members of the 2013 squad and hopes to have resolved their futures this week. Extratime.ie will bring you the latest developments from Turner’s Cross throughout the week.
