Dan's the man for Johnny C
Cork City today confirmed that Dan Murray has signed a new one-year contract at Turner’s Cross.
Having first arrived on Leeside in 2002, the veteran defender has gone on to become Cork City’s all-time top European top goalscorer, as well as captaining the Rebel Army to the Premier Division title, an FAI Cup and a Setanta Sports Cup.
Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, the 31 year old revealed his happiness in signing a new contract.
“I sat down with John to see if he wanted me to stay on and once that was established, everything else was pretty much agreed straightaway.
“I’ve played with Cork City for a long time now and I’m happy to be giving it a go for another year.
“I was very impressed by what John had to say. His enthusiasm is rubbing off on everyone, and he’s played more games than any of us for the club.
“He knows what Cork City is all about, and his passion is undoubted. He wants the best for this club, he wants us up towards the top of the League and he wants us challenging for trophies year in year out.”
Looking to the 2014 season, the former Shamrock Rovers player spoke of the need for a more consistent back four
“If you look at the team throughout last season, there were more changes at the back than anywhere else on the pitch.
"If you’re going to be successful, your back four and your goalkeeper are the one thing you try not and change at all. There were issues with suspensions and injuries but, at the end of the day, we conceded too many goals – and I’m sure it’s something we’ll be working on it.”
The re-signing of Murray brings to nine the number of players Cork City already have on their books for 2014.
