Greene & McMillan commit to Bit O'Red
Sligo Rovers have confirmed two more additions to their 2014 squad this week with the re-signings of Aaron Greene and Evan McMillan.
Both players joined the club last season, with Greene currently in his second spell with the club following a successful 2011 campaign at The Showgrounds before moving to Shamrock Rovers.
McMillan, who has previously played for UCD, St. Patrick’s Athletic and Bohemians, revealed that he turned down an offer to return to Dublin to play for one of his former clubs, choosing to remain in Sligo in order to repay the faith shown in him since arrival in January.
Speaking to sligorovers.com, manager Ian Baraclough believes the big defender can be an important asset for The Bit O’Red next year.
“Evan can be a voice in the team. He wanted to repay the faith the club has shown in him by committing for this season.
“Everything about his life is taken care of because of how the club operates and he wanted to reward that.
“There was lots of competition at the heart of the defence over the course of 2013.
“While Gavin Peers has an injury, nothing is guaranteed. All of the players have to show why they should be in the team and involved.
“Evan is also very efficient. I’m not averse to using him in attack if the situation arises. It’s important to have continuity in the squad and not make wholesale changes.
“He is another player where 2014 is a big season and I think he’ll be a huge asset to us.”
Baraclough also spoke about the renewal of Greene’s contract, and he believes the 23-year-old has enough about him to be one of the best players in the Airtricity League.
“Aaron has settled here with his family and that takes loyalty and commitment to the football side of his life. He is here to do the best he can for Sligo Rovers and that is what I expect from players.
“He know he needs a run of games that his plays deserves. He should be striving for the level of performance we saw at times in 2013 in every game next season.
“I believe he can be among the top players in the League of Ireland. He can cover three different areas, I think he has the attributes to be an excellent striker as well as on the left side.
“The goal in Tallaght on the final day of the season showed his ability as a front man, linking and finish with aplomb. He can cause all sorts of problems and has a really good attitude so he’s another excellent addition.”
