Peers & Rogers renew contracts with Sligo

Sligo Rovers have confirmed their first two signings for the 2014 season as Gavin Peers and Gary Rogers renewed their contracts with the club.

Peers has committed to his ninth season with The Bit O’Red while Rogers will enter his third campaign since arriving at The Showgrounds last season.

Both players have enjoyed landmark seasons as they helped set new individual and club records this season. Rogers has recorded 26 clean sheets in all competitions with two games still to go, a personal best for the ‘keeper. Rogers and his defence also set a club record for the longest time without conceding a goal at home, going 857 minutes from August 24th to October 19th.

Gavin also recently broke into the top ten all-time appearance charts for Sligo Rovers, with his most recent game against Drogheda United bringing him up to 285. Depending on the number of appearances he makes next season, the 27-year-old could move up to fifth ahead of David Pugh, Harry McLoughlin and Gavin Dykes.

Speaking to local press, Rogers revealed his delighted about extending his stay in Sligo and to have future sorted out ahead of a difficult time of year for players around the country.

“It’s nice to get it done early and to know what you are going to be doing for next season, you don’t want to have it hanging over you during the off-season. I’m delighted to be staying in Sligo and hopefully we finish the year successful and continue that success next year.

“It’s a difficult time of year for players at every club, it’s a 40 week season here and I think the FAI can do something about restructuring the League because I think we have the longest off season out of all the European Leagues. I think it could definitely be fleshed out more with a two week break in the middle of the season, but I am happy to have my own deal and dusted anyway.

“I was very happy to get the deal done, I am really enjoying my football here and I think I have actually improved since coming here as well.”
