The Airtricity League First Division comes to a close this Saturday at Ferrycarrig Park and a win for Mervue United over hosts Wexford Youths could land them a play-off spot.

Youths has had a rather disappointing season overall and not much has changed from their mid-table finish last year.

Their form has been erratic this season but they have yet to lose to Mervue at home. Back in June two goals form Eric Molloy was enough to see off the visitors on that summer’s evening. Mervue were on a slump in form at that time and Youths can expect a far tougher test this evening.

Ferrcarrig has been somewhat of fortress for Youths as they’ve gone four games without losing and goals scored have been in plentiful supply. That said, the opposition wasn’t the greatest and in between those home wins they suffered defeats to the top three teams in the league while on the road.

MERVUE UNITED

If either Longford Town or Waterford United loses today and Mervue win, the men from Galway will be in the First Division play-offs. Longford has the trickiest task of the lot, travelling to face league champions Athlone Town in the Midlands derby.

Johnny Glynn’s side will still have a tough few weeks if they are to land the subsequent play-off with a Premier Division side. Win that, and the big wigs at Abbotstown will have a monumental headache on their hands.

Forward Jason Molloy is suspended but Mervue has a fully fit squad to choose from as they seek their sixth win on the trot and the third successive win on the road. The claret and blue has managed all this while not conceding a single goal in five games.

That easily makes them the form team at the moment and Glynn alluded to that when speaking ahead of tonight’s game.

“We have given ourselves a chance of a play-off place with our recent good form and strong finish to the campaign. We are looking forward to the game which we have to win but we had to win the last five games as well to get into this position.”
