Kavanagh ready for ‘massive’ final league game
Waterford United defender Gavin Kavanagh hopes that his side can bring their goalscoring form into their vital final league game of the season this weekend.
The former Cork City defender lines out for the Blues against Cobh Ramblers this Saturday with his Blues side needing a win to ensure a play-off shot and a chance to return to the Premier Division.
Last weekend’s 5-0 win against Salthill Devon was the perfect result to set the Blues up for their final match against Cobh Ramblers, according to Kavanagh.
“It’s a massive game against Cobh. We know how important it is," Kavanagh told Extratime.ie. "We know it’s in our own hands now so we have to go and win, it’s as simple as that, and we’ll see where it takes us after that.
“The five goals are a great confidence boost for us all, and especially for the lads up top too. We’ve been playing well, very well and it’s good to get the few extra goals, but the main importance was to get the three points.
“There’s huge belief in this squad. Over the last 12, 13 weeks we’ve been training very hard, the lads are all together and we’re going to go right to the end so please god we’ll get the three points and that’ll bring it into the play-offs."
Kavanagh, who has missed just two league games this season at the heart of the Blues defence, knows how important last week’s win was after defeat to Athlone Town the previous weekend.
“It was massive, we knew that Mervue were just a point behind so it was very important to pick up the three points, and keep it in our own hands basically going into the last game, and hopefully we can get that win.
“It was really important to bounce back from last week, we were disappointed with the way the game went, although we played well at times we didn’t get the right result, It was just important that we put it right, we got the three points and we move onto the Cobh game."
