Cork Women’s F.C. lost by two goals to nil in Bishopstown Stadium this Sunday with goals from former Cork Women’s F.C. player Sylvia Gee and an own goal from Nat O’Brien sealing the Leesiders demise.

The Cork side got off to the worst possible start when Sylvia Gee seized upon a nervous Amy-Lee Quinn clearance inside the box to smash the ball past Linda McNamara, her close range effort leaving the keeper who captained the Irish Defence Forces Women’s Team midweek with no chance.

The game then developed into a bogged down battle in the middle of the park with Gee and Michelle Dunne tussling with Megan Kelleher and Mary White for possession, with neither side creating a clear-cut chance.

The home side did have a decent chance, and a potential shout for a penalty, when winger Eimear Kinghtly picked up the ball in the box but her initial effort was blocked down while on her second attempt it appeared she was impeded but DLR successfully cleared the ball.

However, disaster was just around the corner for the home side, when seconds before the half-time whistle, a Sylvia Gee free kick from the DLR left hand side was turned in by an unlucky Nat O’Brien after the ball broke in a crowded box.

The second half started like the first with the game bogged down in a midfield battle with DLR Waves occasionally looking like breaking through Cork’s high-line but the strong defending from the Cork side of Amy-Lee Quinn and the goalkeeping of McNamara kept the away side out – with the Cork Keeper pulling off a number of good stops. Mary White saw her free kick gathered by Kilkelly early in the half.

The introduction of Amy Dineen and new signings Michelle Brown and Elaine Walsh caused the tempo to increase from the home side who dominated the end of the match but couldn’t make the breakthrough despite heavy pressure before the final whistle.

A disappointing result for the Leesiders, but positives in the form of new arrivals Michelle Brown and Elaine Walsh putting in good performances, while Val Leahy and Ali Roche have also joined the squad in recent weeks. The next home game for Cork Women’s F.C. will take place against Wexford Youths in St Coleman’s Park in Cobh on the 19^th October 2013 as part of Cork Rebel Week.
