Kenna the Saint?
Jeff Kenna's position as manager of Galway United has this morning become untenable in the eyes of many in the West following the speculation that he is to become the next manager of St Patrick's Athletic which has been allowed to rapidly escalate due to the lack of comment from any of the parties involved.
Sources close to the club have confirmed that Kenna has departed, but with no official word yet from CEO Nick Leeson, supporters have again been left in the dark as to the outcome of this latest twist in an ongoing managerial saga.
With the club looking to push season ticket sales on the back of Kenna having returned to Galway, this news could have a devastating effect on targets which needed to be accomplished in order for the club to have funds to build a competitive squad for next season.
With Kenna now seemingly in talks with St Pats, his comments since retaking the reins at Terryland Park look increasingly misleading as this latest turn of events unfolds.
On applying for other jobs: "I am happy to be at United next season. Yes, I did apply for a number of jobs, but essentially that was about getting a return to England, as my family are based here, and my family has to be my priority."
On committing to new season: "I am genuinely delighted to be at United. There are a good group of people running the club and they gave me my first break in management, so there is an issue of loyalty there as well."
On plans for pre-season: “I’m looking forward to an intense and productive pre-season so we can really hit the ground running, come the start of the new campaign. We are currently in negotiations with players for the new season and I am confident we will have a strong squad to compete in the new ten team premier league.”
On Season Ticket Sales: “Obviously the Season Ticket campaign is a big revenue stream for the club so the club is urging supporters to purchase early. After the great excitement towards the end of last season resulting in the massive numbers that travelled to UCD, I have little doubt that our supporters will stand up and be counted.”
Whatever the outcome of the alleged discussions with St Pats, public opinion has swung dramatically against the former Premiership winner. His assistant from last season, Ian Foster, did show up for the players meeting yesterday and is being seen as the most likely successor to Kenna should it be confirmed that he has indeed left for pastures new.
