Doolin takes over at Cork
Paul Doolin has just been confirmed as new Cork City manager, putting pen to paper on a 2 year deal.
The Dubliner joins the rebel army, after a torrid time at debt-ridden Drogheda.
He was originally keen to play down reports of taking over at Turners Cross, saying: “Cork City is a big club in a big city but I think any manager would only be tempted by it if the club stays with a full-time set-up.”
Doolin will succeed Alan Matthews, who was sacked last month by Tom Coughlan over a pay dispute.
The former Shamrock Rovers player has a proven track record in the league; managing Drogheda to their first league title in 2007, while winning an FAI Cup and two Setanta Cups with the Boynesiders.
Speaking to the clubs official website, Corkcityfc.ie, Doolin said: “First and foremost I would like to thank Tom Coughlan and Cork City for giving me the opportunity to manage the club. Cork City is a big club with proud history, a club which has been successful and we want to build on that.”
While Tom Coughlan also spoke highly of the new manager. “I’m thrilled that Paul has signed up to lead our team in our challenge for all the major honours next season. Our search for new players begins now, and we look forward to more exciting announcements in next few weeks.” said Coughlan, who had come in for some stiff criticism due to the delays in appointing Matthews successor.
The news comes just 24 hours after international midfielder; Colin Healy signed a new deal with the club after several weeks of uncertainty.
The first team are expected to return to training in the coming days, where Doolin will meet his new players for the first time.
